The UCLA Asian Pacific American Law Journal (APALJ) and the Asian Pacific Islander Law Students Association (APILSA) proudly present a panel discussion on:

Asian Americans and the Criminal Justice System

Most coverage of the American criminal justice system overlooks or distorts the treatment of Asian Americans.  Discover what criminal justice professionals in the field are doing and the shortcomings of the current judicial framework as it applies to Asian Americans.

Panelists will address topics including:

· Asian American gangs and gang prevention activity;
· The particular mental health needs of API individuals standing for trial; and
· the interaction between criminal law and immigration law.

Moderated by Professor Jyoti Nanda, UCLA School of Law, who teaches a Youth & Justice seminar on juvenile delinquency.

SPEAKERS: 

Steve Kim, a former Latino gang member who is currently involved with Korean American gang prevention. 

May Chung, LA County Deputy District Attorney, formerly assigned to the Asian Gang Team, which prosecuted violent criminal activity.

Trang Hoang, API Mental Health Alliance Clinical Director, who will discuss the particular mental and cultural competency issues facing API individuals.

Ahilan Arulanantham, Staff Attorney with the ACLU of SoCal, primarily involved in litigation challenging the government’s ability to detain immigrants.
